What is Class IV laser therapy?
Class IV laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that directs concentrated light into tissue at an area of pain or injury. It is a form of photobiomodulation. Cells absorb the light energy, which is thought to support cellular energy production, circulation and the body’s normal healing response.
“Class IV” refers to the laser’s power classification. Class IV lasers are more powerful than the low-level (Class III) devices often called “cold lasers,” so their light can reach deeper tissue in less time. The term “cold laser” is still widely used for both. Unlike surgical lasers, therapy lasers do not cut or burn tissue.

What to expect
- Evaluation. Your provider confirms laser therapy is appropriate and screens for reasons to avoid it.
- Treatment. The handpiece is moved over the area. A session takes about 5 minutes.
- Plan. Laser therapy is given as a series. Plan on 3 to 5 sessions before judging how you are responding. Results vary.
Cost
- Single session: $65
- 5 sessions: $300
- 10 sessions: $550
Safety considerations
Laser therapy is non-invasive and generally well tolerated. Your provider will screen you before treatment. The laser is typically not applied directly over the eyes, over a pregnant abdomen, over known or suspected cancer, or over areas recently treated with photosensitizing medications. Tell your provider about any medical conditions or medications.

Frequently asked questions
Is Class IV laser therapy the same as cold laser therapy?
They are related. “Cold laser” usually refers to low-power (Class III) devices. Class IV lasers are higher-powered and reach deeper tissue more quickly, and they produce a gentle warmth.
Does laser therapy hurt?
No. Most patients feel only mild warmth and find it relaxing.
How long does a laser therapy session take?
About 5 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the condition and how you respond. Plan on 3 to 5 sessions before judging how you are responding.
Can laser therapy be combined with chiropractic care?
Yes. Laser therapy is often used alongside adjustments, neuromuscular re-education and massage as part of one plan.
How much does laser therapy cost?
A single session is $65. A 5-session pack is $300 and a 10-session pack is $550. The practice is self-pay and does not accept insurance.
