Is the screen too bright right now?
About vertigo & dizziness
Vertigo is a spinning sensation. Dizziness is broader and includes lightheadedness and unsteadiness. The balance system relies on the inner ears, the eyes, and position sensors in the joints and muscles, including those of the upper neck. A problem in any of them can leave you feeling off balance.
Common symptoms
- A spinning sensation when you roll over or look up
- Unsteadiness when walking
- Lightheadedness when you stand
- Nausea with head movement
- Dizziness that comes with neck pain or stiffness
Common causes
- Inner ear conditions, including loose crystals in the ear canals (BPPV)
- Inner ear infection or inflammation
- Migraine-related dizziness
- Neck problems, especially after whiplash
- Medication side effects
- Blood pressure changes
How we evaluate vertigo & dizziness
We ask what the dizziness feels like, how long episodes last and what sets them off, because those details point to different causes. The exam includes the neck, balance and a neurological screen. If your symptoms suggest an inner ear, cardiovascular or neurological cause, we will refer you to the right provider before recommending care here.
Care that may be considered
- Upper cervical chiropractic: Evaluation of the atlas and axis, where many of the neck’s position sensors sit.
- Advanced Orthogonal: A gentle instrument adjustment with no neck rotation.
- Neuromuscular re-education: Balance and movement retraining.
Recommendations depend on your exam. Not every option suits every patient, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions
Can the neck cause dizziness?
It can. Dizziness linked to the neck is called cervicogenic dizziness. It is diagnosed after other causes have been considered.
Is an adjustment safe if I am dizzy?
The Advanced Orthogonal adjustment does not involve turning or twisting the neck. Your provider will screen you first and will not adjust if it is not appropriate.
Should I see my doctor first?
If your dizziness is new or severe, or comes with other symptoms, yes. We are glad to coordinate with your physician.
