Is the screen too bright right now?
About headaches & migraines
Headaches fall into a few broad groups. Tension-type headaches feel like a tight band. Migraines are usually throbbing, often one-sided, and can bring nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Cervicogenic headaches start in the neck and are felt in the head. Many people have more than one type.
Common symptoms
- Pain that starts at the base of the skull and spreads forward
- Throbbing pain on one side of the head
- Sensitivity to light, sound or smells
- Nausea during an attack
- Neck stiffness before or during a headache
- Headaches triggered by posture or neck movement
Common causes
- Neck joint and muscle problems
- Past whiplash or head and neck injury
- Posture strain and long screen time
- Stress, poor sleep and dehydration
- Hormonal and dietary triggers
- Family history, particularly for migraine
How we evaluate headaches & migraines
We ask about your headache pattern, triggers and history. If you keep a headache diary, bring it. The exam covers the neck, posture and a neurological screen. When upper cervical care is being considered, X-rays are analyzed to measure atlas position. If your symptoms call for a neurologist or a medical workup, we will say so.
Care that may be considered
- Upper cervical chiropractic: Measurement and correction of the atlas and axis.
- Advanced Orthogonal: A light instrument adjustment behind the ear, with no twisting or cracking.
- Therapeutic massage: Work on the neck and shoulder muscles that often tighten with headaches.
- Neuromuscular re-education: Posture and movement retraining.
Recommendations depend on your exam. Not every option suits every patient, and results vary. Headaches often have more than one contributor, which is why care here follows a whole-body approach.

Frequently asked questions
Can a neck problem cause headaches?
Yes. Cervicogenic headache is a recognized headache type that originates in the neck. An evaluation helps determine whether that applies to you.
Will upper cervical care stop my migraines?
No one can promise that. Some patients report fewer or milder attacks, but research is limited and responses vary. Care is recommended only if your exam supports it.
Should I stop my migraine medication?
No. Do not change any prescription without talking to the physician who prescribed it.
