Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Tampa & Brandon

Very light, rhythmic massage that follows the body’s lymph pathways.

In short: Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle massage technique that encourages lymph fluid to move through its normal channels. People commonly seek it for swelling and fluid retention, including before and after surgery with their surgeon’s approval.

Kim Frey, licensed massage therapist

What is manual lymphatic drainage?

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that returns fluid from the tissues to the bloodstream and plays a part in immune function. Lymph vessels sit just under the skin and have no pump of their own. Manual lymphatic drainage uses light, slow, repetitive strokes in the direction of lymph flow.

What a session feels like

The pressure is far lighter than in a regular massage, closer to a gentle skin stretch. Most people find it deeply relaxing. Sessions usually begin near the neck and trunk to open the main pathways, then move to the area of concern.

Sessions are 30 minutes ($50) or 60 minutes ($100).

Who commonly seeks it?

  • People with swelling or water retention
  • Patients before and after surgery, including cosmetic procedures
  • People who feel puffy or heavy in the legs after travel or long periods of sitting
  • People with lymphedema, the long-term swelling that can follow cancer treatment or lymph node removal

No referral is needed, including after surgery. Bring any instructions your surgeon gave you, and we will follow them.

When it is not appropriate

Lymphatic drainage is generally avoided with an active infection or fever, a blood clot or suspected clot, congestive heart failure, or kidney failure. If you have or have had cancer, tell your therapist before your first session.
