About neck pain
Neck pain is discomfort anywhere between the base of the skull and the tops of the shoulders. Most cases come from the moving parts of the neck: its joints, muscles, ligaments and discs. Many episodes ease within days or weeks. Others keep returning, or never fully settle.
Common symptoms
- Stiffness, or trouble turning your head
- A dull ache, or sharp pain with certain movements
- Tight muscles across the neck and shoulders
- Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
- Pain that travels to the shoulder blade or arm
- Tingling or numbness in an arm or hand
Common causes
- Long hours at a desk, in a car or looking down at a phone
- An awkward sleeping position
- Muscle strain from lifting or sudden movement
- Whiplash from a car accident or fall
- Wear in the joints and discs over time
- An irritated or pinched nerve
How we evaluate neck pain
We start with your history: when the pain began, what changes it, and any past injuries. The exam covers posture, range of motion, and orthopedic and neurological checks. When upper cervical care is being considered, neck X-rays are analyzed to measure the position of the atlas. If your findings point to something outside chiropractic care, we will tell you and refer you.
Care that may be considered
- Upper cervical chiropractic: A focused evaluation of the atlas and axis, the two vertebrae that carry the head.
- Advanced Orthogonal: An instrument adjustment with no twisting or cracking.
- Chiropractic care: Hands-on and instrument techniques for the rest of the spine.
- Therapeutic massage: Soft-tissue work for tight neck and shoulder muscles.
- Neuromuscular re-education: Retraining posture and movement so improvements are more likely to last.
Recommendations depend on your exam. Not every option suits every patient, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions
Will my neck be twisted or cracked?
Not with an Advanced Orthogonal adjustment, which uses an instrument instead of a manual thrust. Other techniques are discussed with you first and adapted to your comfort.
Do I need X-rays for neck pain?
Not always. X-rays are typically taken when upper cervical care is being considered, because the measurements guide the correction. Neck X-rays at the first visit are $35.
Can posture really cause neck pain?
Posture is one of the most common contributors. Holding the head forward for hours loads the joints and muscles at the back of the neck.
How long until my neck feels better?
It varies with the cause and how long you have had the pain. You will get an estimate at your evaluation.
