About back pain
Back pain is among the most common reasons adults seek care. It can sit in the low back, the mid-back between the shoulder blades, or both. For most people it comes from the way the spine’s joints, discs and muscles are loaded, not from a serious disease.
Common symptoms
- Aching or stiffness in the low or mid-back
- Sharp pain when bending, lifting or twisting
- Muscle spasm or a feeling of the back “locking”
- Pain that eases with movement and worsens with sitting
- Pain that spreads into the buttock or thigh
Common causes
- Muscle or ligament strain
- Irritated spinal joints
- Disc bulges or wear
- Long periods of sitting
- Lifting with poor mechanics
- Weak or poorly coordinated core and hip muscles
How we evaluate back pain
Your exam covers posture, spinal and hip motion, muscle testing, and orthopedic and neurological checks of the legs. Because the body compensates, we also check the neck and pelvis. If your history or exam suggests you need imaging or a medical workup, we will refer you.
Care that may be considered
- Chiropractic care: Adjustments chosen for your spine, including flexion-distraction and instrument methods.
- Neuromuscular re-education: Retraining the core and hip muscles that support the spine.
- Deep tissue massage: Firmer soft-tissue work for chronic tightness.
- Class IV laser therapy: Sometimes used over painful or inflamed areas.
- Active Isolated Stretching: Assisted stretching for the hips and hamstrings.
Recommendations depend on your exam. Not every option suits every patient, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions
Should I rest or keep moving?
For most mechanical back pain, gentle movement helps more than bed rest. Your provider will tell you what is appropriate for you.
Do I need an MRI first?
Usually not. Imaging is recommended when the exam or your history points to something that needs a closer look.
Why would you check my neck for back pain?
The spine works as one system. A problem in one region can change posture and loading in another, so the whole spine is evaluated.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on the cause and how you respond. You will get an estimate at your evaluation.
