About neuropathy
Peripheral nerves carry sensation and movement signals between the spinal cord and the rest of the body. When they are damaged, the signals misfire. The feet are usually affected first, and symptoms can move upward over time. Diabetes is the most common cause in the United States.
Common symptoms
- Numbness or reduced feeling in the feet or hands
- Tingling or “pins and needles”
- Burning or stabbing pain, often worse at night
- Sensitivity to light touch
- Balance trouble or a feeling of walking on padding
- Weakness in the feet or hands
Common causes
- Diabetes and prediabetes
- Vitamin B12 and other deficiencies
- Chemotherapy and some other medications
- Alcohol overuse
- Thyroid, kidney or autoimmune conditions
- A pinched nerve in the spine, which can mimic neuropathy
How we evaluate neuropathy
We review your medical history, medications and any testing you have had, then check sensation, reflexes, strength and balance. We also examine the spine, because a compressed nerve root can cause similar symptoms. If you do not yet have a medical diagnosis for your neuropathy, we will ask you to see your physician.
Care that may be considered
- Class IV laser therapy: Regularly used at the practice for patients with neuropathy. Research is still developing and responses vary.
- Chiropractic care: Used when the spine is contributing to nerve irritation.
- Neuromuscular re-education: Balance and gait retraining.
- Nutrition & supplements: Guidance to discuss with your physician.
Recommendations depend on your exam. Not every option suits every patient, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions
Can neuropathy be reversed?
It depends on the cause and how long the nerves have been affected. Treating the underlying cause matters most. No outcome can be promised.
Does laser therapy hurt?
No. Most patients feel a gentle warmth.
How many laser sessions will I need?
Plan on 3 to 5 sessions before judging how you are responding. Sessions take about 5 minutes and are done at the Brandon office. Results vary.
Should I keep seeing my doctor?
Yes. Care here is in addition to the care you get from the physician managing the cause of your neuropathy. It does not replace it.
