Carpal Tunnel Care in Tampa & Brandon

Hand numbness can start at the wrist, the elbow or the neck. We check all three.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve where it passes through the wrist. It causes numbness and tingling in the thumb and first three fingers. We evaluate the wrist, forearm and neck, because a nerve can be irritated at more than one point.

About carpal tunnel

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage at the base of the palm, formed by the wrist bones and a tough ligament. The median nerve and nine tendons share that space. Swelling or narrowing puts pressure on the nerve, which supplies feeling to the thumb, the index and middle fingers, and part of the ring finger.

Common symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb and first three fingers
  • Symptoms that wake you at night
  • Shaking the hand out for relief
  • Dropping things or a weak grip
  • Aching in the wrist or forearm

Common causes

  • Repetitive hand and wrist motion
  • Long periods with the wrist bent
  • Pregnancy and fluid retention
  • Diabetes and thyroid conditions
  • Arthritis or a past wrist injury
  • Nerve irritation in the neck that adds to the problem

How we evaluate carpal tunnel

We test sensation, grip and thumb strength, and use wrist and nerve tension tests to see where the nerve is sensitive. The elbow, shoulder and neck are examined too. If your findings suggest significant nerve compression, we will recommend nerve testing and a medical opinion.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need surgery?

Many mild and moderate cases are managed without surgery. Severe or long-standing compression may need it, and a physician or hand surgeon makes that call.

Do wrist splints help?

A neutral wrist splint at night is a common first step. Ask your provider whether it suits you.

Could it be coming from my neck?

Sometimes. An irritated nerve root in the neck can cause similar symptoms or add to a wrist problem. That is why the neck is examined.

How many visits will I need?

It varies. You will get an estimate at your evaluation.
