About whiplash & auto injuries
In a rear-end collision the body is pushed forward while the head lags behind, then snaps forward. The whole movement takes a fraction of a second. Even at low speeds it can stretch the soft tissues of the neck and irritate its joints. The same thing can happen in a fall or a contact sport.
Common symptoms
- Neck pain and stiffness, often worse the next day
- Headaches starting at the base of the skull
- Shoulder and upper back pain
- Dizziness or trouble concentrating
- Tingling in the arms or hands
- Jaw pain
Common causes
- Rear-end and side-impact car accidents
- Slips and falls
- Contact sports
- Any sudden jolt to the head and neck
How we evaluate whiplash & auto injuries
If you have not been medically cleared after a significant accident, do that first. Here, we take a detailed history of the accident and your symptoms, examine the neck, shoulders and jaw, and run a neurological screen. When appropriate, X-rays of the upper neck are analyzed to measure atlas position.
Care that may be considered
- Upper cervical chiropractic: The top of the neck is commonly affected by whiplash.
- Advanced Orthogonal: A precise instrument adjustment with no twisting.
- Therapeutic massage: Soft-tissue work as the neck muscles recover.
- Class IV laser therapy: Sometimes used over strained tissue.
- Neuromuscular re-education: Restoring normal neck movement and strength.
Recommendations depend on your exam. Not every option suits every patient, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions
My accident was minor. Do I still need to be checked?
Symptoms can be delayed by hours or days, and low-speed impacts can still strain the neck. An evaluation is reasonable if anything feels off.
How long does whiplash take to heal?
Many people improve within weeks. Some have symptoms that last longer, which is one reason early evaluation is worthwhile.
Should I wear a neck collar?
Collars are generally used for short periods, if at all. Ask your provider what is right for your injury.
Do you bill auto insurance?
The practice is self-pay and does not bill insurance. Payment is due at the time of service.
