When the dentist has done their part
Dentists address the teeth and bite, and can provide night guards. For many people that is enough. Some still have jaw pain, clicking, headaches or a tight neck afterward. In those cases the muscles and joints of the upper neck may be part of the picture.
People with TMJ problems commonly report:
- Jaw pain, clicking or locking
- Clenching or grinding, often with morning jaw soreness
- Headaches around the temples
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Ear fullness or ringing with no ear problem found
How we evaluate the jaw and neck
We look at how your jaw opens and tracks, feel the jaw muscles and joints, and examine your neck and head posture. When upper cervical care is being considered, X-rays are analyzed to measure the position of the atlas. If your symptoms point to a dental cause or a joint problem that needs a specialist, we refer you.
Care that may be considered
- Upper cervical chiropractic with Advanced Orthogonal instrument adjustments, done at the Brandon office. No twisting or cracking of the neck.
- Therapeutic massage for the jaw, neck and shoulder muscles
- Neuromuscular re-education to reduce the load that posture puts on the jaw
- Shockwave therapy, which is used here for TMJ pain, at the Brandon office
Results vary, and no outcome is promised. Keep wearing any appliance your dentist has prescribed unless your dentist tells you otherwise.
For dentists and dental specialists
If a patient’s symptoms continue after appropriate dental care, an upper cervical evaluation can show whether the neck is involved. We send patients back to their dentist for anything dental.

Frequently asked questions
Should I see a dentist or a chiropractor for TMJ?
Often both. A dentist addresses the teeth and bite. A chiropractor evaluates the neck, posture and muscles that share the load with the jaw.
I already have a night guard. Is there anything else to try?
A night guard protects the teeth and can ease clenching. If pain continues, an evaluation of the upper neck can show whether it may be contributing.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No. You can schedule directly.
